Gainesville, Fla. – On August 28, Optym hosted P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School’s FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 4118 as they demonstrated the robot they built and used in competition this past year. Optym has agreed to sponsor the team, nicknamed the Roaring Riptide, with a $1500 donation toward their efforts for the upcoming season.

“Our team believes in the benefits of the FIRST Robotics program, since many of our students have developed an interest in pursuing engineering and science after high school.” said Austin Mitchell, a senior at P.K. Yonge and member of Team 4118. “We had a great time when we came to Optym and gave a demonstration of our robot, and we are very grateful for their sponsorship of our team!”

Team 4118 competes every year in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a competition founded in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Each year teams from around the world participate by building a robot in just six weeks and competing in a sports-like atmosphere. Last year, Team 4118 made it to the semi-finals in both Florida regional competitions; their ambition is to increase their abilities so that they can progress to national events.
