CSX Transportation was ready to build a large new intermodal yard with a capital investment of about $200 million. The yard was expected to handle over 30 trains and process about 2,500 cars per day. An engineering company designed the layout of this yard; however, CSX wanted to evaluate this layout for efficiency because executives wondered whether the proposed layout could meet the yard’s projected processing capacity. The company also wanted to know whether it was the best layout for the given budget and if its capacity could be increased by changing the layout. CSX hired Optym to create the best possible layout so the company could have confidence in the yard’s ability to process the projected number of cars.
